Our Process

The Estimate

It’s impossible to provide an accurate estimate without first gaining a deep understanding of your space, the scope of the job, and your design goals. The process starts when you send us rough sketches with specifications and dimensions, or when we receive your architectural renderings. This information helps us form an initial estimate, and our mood boards will help us get an idea of the look you’re after.

Design Consultation

If our initial estimate fits your budget, we’ll work with you, by phone or email, to finalize the details of your cabinetry design. We’ll invite you to our local shop for a face-to-face consultation, or we can meet at your home to evaluate the space and confirm its dimensions. After the design consultation, we’ll have a better idea of the project’s layout, the materials you’ve chosen, and the completion timeline. From there, we’ll produce two-dimensional drawings and an accurate final estimate.

Final Drawings and Deposit

Our payment schedule follows the project’s production phases: design, fabrication, and final installation. When we’ve received the initial payment, we’ll set a date to start your project. Our designer will produce manufacturing drawings that show the project’s materials and final measurements. The process isn’t always linear, but it’s important to get each step right, as it’s very difficult to modify plans once the fabrication phase starts. Once you’ve approved our drawings, the installation process can move forward.

The Post-Production Phase

Once we’ve made your custom bookshelves, cabinetry, or countertops, we’ll let you know that we’re ready to install them, and we’ll accept final payment. Lead times are running at approximately four to eight weeks, but the actual turnaround time depends on the scope of the job, the complexity of the design, and the materials and finishes you’ve chosen.

We Use High-Quality Materials

Our great designs are only part of what makes our cabinets so functional and beautiful; construction methods and materials are just as important. At Cardea Cabinets, we make every piece using only the best materials and construction methods. We use hardware from well-known European manufacturers like Grass, Salice, Hafele, and Blum, which means you’re sure to enjoy lasting results. For more than 30 years, we’ve built cabinets in styles ranging from Old World to modern, and we can perfectly match your style preferences. We know that your home reflects your lifestyle and personal tastes, and our designs will artfully combine design and function.

Custom Wood Cabinetry

Wooden cabinetry gives any kitchen a classic, timeless feel. They’re popular among homeowners because, whether they’re left natural or stained, they work with almost any décor. Below, you’ll find out about some of the woods we use.

  • Hickory wood is lighter in weight than oak, but it offers similar strength and grain pattern. This pale-yellow wood is easy to stain, but like maple, it looks best under a natural or clear finish. A great choice for rustic kitchens, hickory wood is rarely used in custom cabinetry.
  • Maple wood cabinets are made of a light-colored, fine-grained wood that’s costlier but less dense than oak. Maple is a common choice among custom cabinet makers. It’s easy to stain, but it’s typically used with a natural or clear finish for a modern, stylish look.
  • White oak is just as durable, if not more so, than red oak. Its golden tones and subtle grain make it a popular choice for custom cabinets, especially in period-look homes. In most cases, white oak is only available as a custom cabinetry option.
  • Red oak is durable, strong, and a less costly choice for those needing custom wooden cabinetry. Available in numerous finishes and styles, red oak’s distinctive grain pattern makes it great for traditional-style jobs. This species of wood is a fine choice for semi-custom, custom, and stock cabinetry.

These are just a few of the most common materials used in cabinetry construction. Our designers can use these woods, as well as other components, to achieve a range of style and functionality goals.
